Eid al-Mawlid Reminder – How to Talk to Kids About the Prophet ﷺ

Introduction: Parents and the Question of Mawlid

Every year, when the month of Rabi‘ al-Awwal arrives, many Muslim parents wonder:
“Should we celebrate the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ birthday with our children?”

It’s a sincere question. Parents want their kids to love the Prophet ﷺ, to remember him, and to feel connected to him. But it’s also important that we answer this question with knowledge, truth, and guidance from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

👉 The reality is: The Prophet ﷺ never celebrated his own birthday, nor did his companions (رضي الله عنهم). The early generations of Muslims did not mark it as a holiday. That is why scholars throughout history have explained that Mawlid is a bid‘ah (an innovation in religion).

But this doesn’t mean we miss the chance to teach our kids about the Prophet ﷺ. In fact, it’s the perfect reminder to focus on what really matters: following his Sunnah and building love for him in authentic ways.

Why Celebrating the Mawlid Is Not Part of Islam

  1. The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions never did it.
If celebrating birthdays or the Prophet’s ﷺ birthday was good, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have been the first to do it. His closest companions and the righteous generations never marked this day.
  2. Islam teaches us how to show love.
Real love for the Prophet ﷺ is not through one annual festival. It’s through living his Sunnah daily: our speech, our manners, and our worship.
  3. Bid‘ah leads us away from Sunnah.
Adding new acts of worship that were never practiced by the Prophet ﷺ often distracts us from the real teachings he left behind.

💡 How to Teach Kids About the Prophet ﷺ Authentically

If parents want their children to connect with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, here are five powerful and practical ways:

1️⃣ Tell Stories from the Seerah 📖
Children love stories. Share how the Prophet ﷺ was kind to children, animals, neighbors, and even those who hurt him.

2️⃣ Practice His Sunnah at Home 🏡
Start small: saying Bismillah before eating, greeting with Assalamu Alaikum, or smiling often. Small sunnahs build big love.

3️⃣ Show Love in Action 🌿
Explain that true love means following his teachings. When your child helps a sibling or shares food, remind them: “This is what the Prophet ﷺ loved.”

4️⃣ Read Qur’an Together 📖
Remind kids that the Prophet ﷺ lived by the Qur’an. Even reading one page together and reflecting can deepen their connection.

5️⃣ Make Du‘ā for Him 🤲
Encourage kids to say Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad regularly. This builds habit and respect.

✨ The Real Takeaway for Parents

When children see us living by the Prophet’s ﷺ example, their hearts will naturally fill with love and respect for him. They don’t need extra festivals or innovations to connect with him.

Instead, they need parents who model his Sunnah, teach his stories, and make his legacy alive in the home every single day.
