المعنى المحوري  ·  CORE MEANING
التحول من هيئة هشة إلى هيئة متينة عن طريق اللف والفتل — كتحويل الصوف المنفوش إلى خيط مغزول متين.
The transformation from a loose, fragile form into a firm, cohesive one through twisting and spinning — like raw, fluffy wool being spun into a strong, tight thread.

فائدة  ·  KEY INSIGHT
جذر (ك و ن) هو فعل “الكينونة” (verb to be) — من أهم المفاهيم في كل اللغات الإنسانية على الإطلاق. لكن في العربية غالبًا ما يُحذف ويُقدَّر تقديرًا (“أبي في البيت” تقديرها “أبي كائنٌ في البيت”)، على عكس لغات مثل الإنجليزية حيث “is/am/are” لا يمكن حذفها.
The root (K-W-N) is the verb “to be” — one of the most fundamental concepts in every human language. Yet in Arabic it is very often omitted and merely implied (“my father [is] in the house” is grammatically understood as containing a hidden “kana”), unlike languages such as English where “is/am/are” can never be dropped.

How to Tell the Meanings of “Kana” Apart · كيف تُفرَّق بين معاني “كان”؟
Eternal Continuity
الأزلية والاستمرار
وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا
“And Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful”
Usually with reference to Allah: has always been and remains so, without interruption. · غالباً مع ذات الله عز وجل: كان ولا يزال، دون انقطاع.

Becoming / Transformation
الصيرورة والتحوُّل
كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ
“You were the best nation”
Addressed to a specific generation — indicates a shift from one state to another. · خطاب لجيل بعينه، يفيد الانتقال من حال إلى حال.

Plain Existence
الوجود المطلق
وَإِنْ كَانَ ذُو عُسْرَةٍ
“And if there is a debtor in hardship”
Meaning “if such a person exists”, with no particular time reference. · بمعنى “وُجد”، من غير دلالة زمنية خاصة.

الأوزان الصرفية  ·  MORPHOLOGICAL PATTERNS
“Kana” is classified among the “deficient verbs” (al-af’al al-naqisa) in Arabic grammar — it does not denote an action occurring in time, but instead links a predicate to a subject (it enters a nominal sentence, keeping the subject in the nominative and putting the predicate in the accusative).

As the teacher Ayman Abdel-Raheem puts it: “The concept of the verb ‘to be’ should stay present in the mind at all times, since a great many Arabic constructions cannot be understood except by supplying an implied, omitted ‘kana’ — especially on the majority grammatical view that a mere prepositional phrase cannot stand alone as a predicate.”

سؤال 1 من 3 · QUESTION 1 OF 3
01
ما المعنى المحوري لجذر (ك و ن)؟ وكيف يفسِّر ذلك استخدامه في “كُنْ فَيَكُونُ” للتعبير عن الخلق من العدم؟ — (تأمَّلي صورة غزل الصوف)
What is the core meaning of the root (K-W-N)? How does this explain its use in “kun fa-yakun” (“Be, and it is”) to express creation from nothing? — (Think of the image of spinning wool)

JADHR 03 · KWNROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
الإجابة · ANSWER 1
المعنى المحوري: التحول من هيئة هشة (أو معدومة) إلى هيئة متينة متماسكة عن طريق اللف والفتل. “كن فيكون” = الله عز وجل يحوّل العدم (أهش ما يكون) إلى وجود متماسك بمجرد الأمر — فالخلق هو أعلى صورة لهذا التحول: من لا شيء إلى شيء.
The core meaning: transformation from a fragile (or nonexistent) form into a firm, cohesive one through twisting. “Kun fa-yakun” (Be, and it is) means Allah transforms nothingness — the most fragile state imaginable — into cohesive existence by a single command. Creation is the ultimate instance of this transformation: from nothing into something.

سؤال 2 من 3 · QUESTION 2 OF 3
02
ما الفرق بين استخدام “كان” للدلالة على الأزلية (“وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا”) واستخدامها للدلالة على الصيرورة (“كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ”)؟
What is the difference between using “kana” to indicate eternal continuity (“Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful”) and using it to indicate becoming/transformation (“You were the best nation”)?

JADHR 03 · KWNROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
الإجابة · ANSWER 2
مع ذات الله عز وجل، تفيد “كان” غالباً الأزلية والاستمرار الدائم (لم يزل ولا يزال) — مصاحبة الزمن لا انقطاعه. أما “كنتم خير أمة” فتفيد الصيرورة (التحول من حال إلى حال)، وهي خطاب لجيل بعينه (الصحابة) صاروا كذلك، لا أزلاً.
With reference to Allah, “kana” usually indicates eternal, unbroken continuity — He has always been and remains so, not a completed past. But “you were the best nation” indicates becoming — a shift from one state to another, addressed to a specific generation (the Companions) who came to be that way, not eternally so.

سؤال 3 من 3 · QUESTION 3 OF 3
03
لماذا يمكن حذف “كان” من الجملة العربية وتقديرها ضمناً (كما في “أبي في البيت”)، رغم أن مفهوم الكينونة في غاية الأهمية؟ — (تأمَّلي الفرق بين الأفعال الناقصة والجملة الاسمية)
Why can “kana” be omitted from an Arabic sentence and merely implied (as in “my father [is] in the house”), even though the concept of “being” is so fundamental? — (Think about deficient verbs versus the nominal sentence)

JADHR 03 · KWNROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
Because “kana” is a deficient verb that enters a nominal sentence to link a predicate to a subject, not to denote an independent action. Per the majority grammatical view, a prepositional phrase (like “in the house”) cannot stand as a predicate on its own, so an implied verb of being (“existing” or “situated”) is understood to complete the grammatical sense without always needing to be spoken.
