المعنى المحوري · CORE MEANING
من يُذَلُّ إليه ويُخضع له، ويُحتجَب، ويُشتاق إليه ويُحَنّ له، ويُفزَع إليه — وكل هذه المعاني قلبية وجدانية في جوهرها، لا مجرد عقلية.
The One before whom all creation is humbled and submits, who is concealed from sight, who is longed and yearned for as a nursing young longs for its mother, and to whom every soul flees in fear and need. At root, these are all matters of the heart, not just the intellect.

فائدة · KEY INSIGHT
بما أن أكثر الكلمات ورودًا في القرآن هي من الجذر (ء ل هـ)، فمفهوم الألوهية هو أكثر المفاهيم ورودًا في القرآن كله — وهو نفسه أول ما يُطلب من الداخل إلى الإسلام أن يفهمه: “لا إله إلا الله”.
Since more words from this root occur in the Quran than from any other root, the concept of Divinity (Uluhiyyah) is, in effect, the single most repeated concept in the entire Quran — and it is the very first thing a person entering Islam is asked to understand: “La ilaha illa Allah.”

سؤال الاشتقاق · DERIVATION QUESTION
هل كلمة “الله” مشتقة من الجذر (ء ل هـ)، أم هي عَلَم مُرتجَل بلا اشتقاق؟
Is the word “Allah” derived from this root, or is it a proper name coined outright with no derivation at all?
JADHR 01 · ALHROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
OPINION 01
Opinion One: Not Derived (a proper name coined outright)
الرأي الأول: غير مشتقة (عَلَم مُرتجَل)
لام التعريف لا تسقط من الكلمة عند النداء (“يا الله”)، بخلاف أي اسم مشتق تُحذف منه “ال” في النداء (تقول “يا رحيم” ولا تقول “يا الرحيم”). فدل هذا على أن “ال” هنا من بنية الكلمة نفسها لا زيادة عليها، وأن “الله” عَلَم لا يُشتق من شيء.
The definite article (“al-“) does not drop when the word is used in direct address — one says “ya Allah” (O Allah), never “ya ar-Rahim” the way one drops “al-” from any derived attribute in the vocative (“ya Rahim”, not “ya ar-Rahim”). This shows the “al-” is fused into the word’s own structure, not a prefix — meaning “Allah” is a name in its own right, not derived from anything.
الله هو أصل كل شيء ومصدره، فيصعب تصوّر أن يكون مشتقًا من شيء آخر حتى لفظًا.
Allah is the origin and source of everything that exists, so it is difficult even linguistically to conceive of Him as derived from something else.
JADHR 01 · ALHROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
OPINION 02
Opinion Two: Derived (four readings converging on one root)
From alaha – ya’lahu (“to worship”): the core of “worship” here is humility and submission — as one says “I paved the road” meaning “I tamed and smoothed it.” On this reading, “Ilah” (pattern fi’al) means “the Worshipped One,” and “Allah” is a phonetic contraction of “al-Ilah”: the hamzah’s vowel shifted onto the letter before it, the hamzah itself was dropped, and the two resulting lams merged into one.
From aliha (“to be bewildered”): minds are bewildered before Allah’s magnificence. Or from the image of a weaned young animal crying out in longing for its mother — human souls likewise yearn for Allah. Or from the sense “to take refuge”: Allah is the One sought and fled to in every want and hardship, the way an imam is so named because people follow him in prayer.
من (لاهَ يَلوه) بمعنى احتجب، أي المحتجَب الذي لا تدركه الأبصار وهو يُدرك الأبصار.
From laha – yaluhu (“to be concealed”): the Concealed One whom sight cannot perceive, while He perceives all sight.
من (وَلَهَ) بمعنى المفزوع إليه، لأن الخلائق كلها تفزع إليه — والواو قُلبت همزة (كما في “وشاح/إشاح” و”وعاء/إعاء”)، ثم جرى عليها ما جرى في الصورة الأولى.
From walaha (“to be fled to in fear”): all creation flees to Him in distress — with the initial waw shifting to a hamzah (a known pattern in Arabic, as in wishah/ishah), after which the word follows the same contraction as the first reading.

Every scholar who held the word to be derived ultimately traced it back to these same three root letters. From a complementary angle (Lisan al-Arab and al-Raghib al-Isfahani), the root’s core sense can also be described as “a translucence or light carrying a felt intensity” — like sunlight and its heat (which is why some pre-Islamic Arabs called the sun “al-Ilaha”), or like the sheer, translucent skin a snake sheds. This is why words from this root, in their original Arabic usage, are all words of the heart — belonging to the same family as love, longing, and awe — not abstract intellectual terms. The testimony “there is no ilah but Allah” is therefore not a mere mental acknowledgment, but an expression of what fills the heart: attachment, love, fear, and hope directed to no one but Allah.

الأوزان الصرفية · MORPHOLOGICAL PATTERNS
| اللَّهُمَّ | فَعْلُمَّ | اسم / Name | نداء — Vocative form (الميم بدل ياء النداء المحذوفة — the final م stands in for the dropped vocative ياء) |
“Allah” is a proper name reserved for God alone — no false claimant to divinity throughout history has ever taken it as his own name (even Musaylimah the Liar, who claimed the attributes “al-Rahman” and “al-Rahim” for himself, never dared claim the name “Allah”). “Ilah”, by contrast, applies to anything worshipped, whether rightly or falsely.

Al-Khattabi said: “A man ‘alaha’ to another man — sought refuge in him — when he fled to him in fear over some calamity that had befallen him. So the man who is fled to, and who then shelters and secures the one who fled to him, is called an ‘ilah’ — just as a man is called an ‘imam’ because people follow his lead in prayer.”

سؤال 1 من 3 · QUESTION 1 OF 3
01
ما معنى “لا إلَه إلا الله”؟ وما معنى الشهادة (“أشهد”)؟ — (أشهد = أُبَيِّن وأُعلم بما أعلم، لا مجرد رؤية بصرية)
What does “there is no ilah but Allah” (La ilaha illa Allah) mean? And what does “I testify” (ash-hadu) mean? — (“I testify” = I make clear and declare what I know — not merely “I have seen with my eyes”)
JADHR 01 · ALHROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
الإجابة · ANSWER 1
لا معبود بحق إلا الله — الذي يُخضع له ويُمتثَل لأمره، ويَحتجب عن الأبصار ولا يُحجب هو عن شيء، ويُشتاق إليه ويُحَنّ له، ويُفزع إليه في كل حاجة. أُبَيِّن وأُعلن بما أعلم: أن لا معبود بحق إلا الله.
There is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah — the One before whom all submit, who is concealed from every sight while nothing is concealed from Him, who is yearned and longed for, and to whom every soul flees in every need. “I testify” = I make clear and declare what I know: that there is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah.

سؤال 3 من 3 · QUESTION 3 OF 3
03
لماذا تُعتبر ترجمة “لا إله إلا الله” إلى “there is no god but God” ترجمة قاصرة؟ — (فكّري في الفرق بين معنى “إله” ومعنى “رب”)
Why is translating “La ilaha illa Allah” as “there is no god but God” considered an inadequate translation? — (Think about the difference between the meaning of “ilah” and the meaning of “rabb”)
JADHR 01 · ALHROOTS MUSLIM SCHOOL
Because the English word “god” is a bare, uncoined term, not a derived one — and in meaning it sits closer to “rabb” (the Sovereign Master and Sustainer) than to “ilah” (the One truly worthy of worship, with everything that entails: humility, submission, yearning, and refuge). So “no god but God” more accurately renders “there is no rabb but Allah,” while the precise meaning of “La ilaha illa Allah” is “there is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah.”
