Sacred months in Islam: Meaning, Quranic Proof, and Goals

As the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, Muharram stands out as one of the sacred months in Islam. These months are highlighted in the Quran as times when good deeds are multiplied and Muslims are encouraged to avoid sins and strive for peace. Muharram is more than just a new page on the calendar—it’s a sacred opportunity to reconnect with Allah ﷻ.

What Are the Sacred Months in Islam?

Allah ﷻ mentions the sacred months in Islam clearly in the Quran, in Surah At-Tawbah (9:36):

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve… of which four are sacred.”

The four sacred months are:

  1. Dhul-Qi’dah
  2. Dhul-Hijjah
  3. Muharram
  4. Rajab

During these months, Muslims are encouraged to stay away from fighting, avoid all types of sin, and increase good deeds. The theme across all four months is clear: peace, reflection, and spiritual self-improvement.

Why Is Muharram So Special?

Besides being part of the sacred months, Muharram has a special status as the first month of the Islamic year. It’s a time for fresh beginnings and spiritual reflection for Muslims around the world.

✅ Reflect on the past year
✅ Make sincere intentions for self-improvement
✅ Increase worship like extra dua, fasting, and Quran reading

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah: Muharram.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This shows the extra rewards tied to good actions—especially fasting—during this month.
